Reflections on Prosthodontics and Orthodontics

On February 20, 1986, I entered this world within the confines of a hospital situated in Shinjuku, Tokyo. Subsequently, I commenced my educational journey at Tamagawa Gakuen Elementary School, an institution that holds significance as my father's alma mater, and I continued my academic pursuits through both junior high and high school within the same esteemed establishment. During my high school years, I was afforded the opportunity to participate in the YFU exchange program, which is supported by governmental initiatives, allowing me to immerse myself in a year of study at the OTTO-HAHN Gymnasium in Hannover, Germany.
Having commenced my violin studies at the tender age of two, it was in Germany where I received mentorship from a distinguished professor at the Hannover University of Music. This transformative experience profoundly influenced my aspirations to forge a career as a violinist. Although I initially contemplated pursuing my undergraduate studies abroad, I ultimately opted to enroll in the Diploma Course at Toho Gakuen University. In my second year, I ventured back to Germany to further my education.
During my time abroad, I had the privilege of studying under a professor from Cologne University, who had notably served as the concertmaster of the Berlin Philharmonic at the remarkably young age of 18. I was graciously welcomed as an unpaid live-in apprentice, marking the distinction of being the first Japanese student to benefit from this esteemed teacher’s guidance. My existence there was characterized by an intense regimen of training that spanned from dawn until dusk. I participated in numerous music festivals, and at the Kusatsu Music Festival, I had the esteemed honor of performing before Her Majesty Empress Michiko—a truly enriching experience.
However, in my youth, I began to grapple with the question of whether I truly wished to dedicate my life entirely to music. Consequently, I made the decision to sit for the entrance examination to a dental school, where I envisioned the opportunity to employ my manual dexterity while fostering my independence. I was accepted into the Department of Dentistry at Asahi University. Throughout my academic journey, I received substantial support from a myriad of educators, graduated successfully, and was subsequently awarded a scholarship from Asahi University to undertake a brief sojourn at Peking University.
Moreover, with the backing of Ichida Clinic and the university, I organized a solo violin recital, for which I remain immensely grateful to all who contributed their assistance.
In the wake of my father's passing during my student years, I resolved not to leave my mother to face solitude. Consequently, I undertook the role of a resident doctor at a hospital in close proximity to my home in Machida City, Tokyo. My supervising physician was a formidable female doctor from Niigata University. Although she maintained high standards, she was an exceptionally compassionate educator, and I continue to maintain correspondence with her.
From that point onward, I cultivated a keen interest in orthodontics and subsequently found a position at Ginza Orthodontic Clinic. The environment there was undoubtedly among the finest in Japan. The director, Dr. Shinichi Fukasawa, is a preeminent figure in the realms of accelerated orthodontics and lingual orthodontics, and he engaged with me with an admirable sincerity throughout my training. I hold him in the highest regard as an extraordinary mentor.
I also received invaluable support from Dr. Daishi Kikuta at the Azabu-Juban D Dental Office, to whom I was introduced during my tenure at Ginza. Our connection remains a source of profound gratitude for me. Additionally, I extend my heartfelt thanks to Vice President Yasuo Tamura of Asahi University, who has consistently supported me since my days as a student.
There exists an array of individuals to whom I owe an immeasurable debt of gratitude. I have inadvertently caused distress to many and have been the beneficiary of support from even more, and it is through this intricate web of relationships that I have come to be who I am today.
In regard to orthodontics, I engaged in direct studies of lingual orthodontics under the tutelage of Professor Fukasawa, a former lecturer at New York University and a distinguished figure who served as Vice Director in the orthodontics department there. I later attained specialist certification from the European Society of Lingual Orthodontics, an institution renowned for its historical significance and legacy in the field. I firmly believe that very few practices place emphasis on orthodontics that not only prioritize aesthetics but also consider the intricacies of occlusal alignment.
Nonetheless, I contend that the results of orthodontic interventions may only manifest after a decade or two; thus, I am resolutely committed to the continuous refinement of my skills. Orthodontics represents a long-term commitment, and with it comes a profound sense of responsibility. Given that patients choose my clinic from among numerous alternatives, I endeavor to approach each individual with sincerity and dedication.
